2009-2010 Studies:

Spring Garden Township Public Safety Study

This study was designed, conducted, and completed by the SOC 336 (Research Methods II) classes.

Deavers Area Neighborhood Association Community Survey

This study was designed by the SOC 335 (Research Methods I) classes and conducted and completed by the SOC 340 (Urban Sociology) class.

This project involved students from SOC 335 (Research Methods I) classes researching four health conditions in York County that have either remained stable or gotten worse as discovered by the health assessment done for the county every three to four years.  The conditions were melanoma, smoking, underweight babies, and DUIs.  The project involved interviews with key informants as well as secondary research to locate evidence-based programs in each area.
 
Previous Studies:

2007-2008 Leave-A-Legacy Replication Study

This study is currently being designed and conducted by the SOC 335 and SOC 336 students to to replicate a study from 2002 (read more here).

2007 Quality of Life in York County

This study was designed and conducted by the SOC 335 and SOC 336 students to be a complement to YorkCounts. It assesses the residents' perceptions of their quality of life in the county.

YWCA's Renaissance Project

This study assesses the residents' feeling of safety in their neighborhoods.

Student Initiated and Conducted Research in 2007

Kris Pollick did an analysis of a survey conducted by Christ Lutheran Church of their congregation.

Christy McLaughlin, Dawn Wilson, Jon Beck, and Chris Caba completed a study of brain drain among York College seniors. This study examined seniors' plans after graduation and why they will or will not remain in the York area.

Shawn McCloskey conducted a study that examined differences in answers on mail surveys versus telephone interviews.

Ongoing and Future Projects

This summer a student is completing the Southwestern Regional Police Department Image Study as an independent study.

In the fall, the research classes will be starting a program evaluation of Lutheran Social Services’ Senior Companion Program. 

The Institute will be helping the Byrnes Health Education Center modify one of their program evaluation tools. 

Drs. Bittner and Polk will be continuing their work on a comparative study of immigrant relations in the United States and Austria.
